Tinnitus treatment cost depends on which kind of care you choose and what the clinic includes, so there is no single price. CareCredit’s cost guide puts the average hearing test at $121 and two years of tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) at $3,022. Ask every clinic for an itemized quote, and ask your insurer for its coverage decision in writing before you start.
Tinnitus is the sound of ringing, roaring, buzzing, hissing or clicking that you hear inside your head, with no outside source. Johns Hopkins Medicine’s tinnitus overview notes that tinnitus “may be caused by many things” and that each cause “may be addressed differently.” So the cost question depends on what is behind your symptoms, and the next useful question is what is causing them. Cleveland Clinic’s tinnitus treatment page says there may not be a simple answer, which is why it starts with a hearing test and an ear, nose and throat (ENT) visit.
Harvard Health’s guide to new thinking about tinnitus advises that if you have tinnitus despite a normal hearing test, you should report it to your primary care doctor or ENT specialist.
What does tinnitus treatment cost?
Prices as of October 29, 2026; check the clinic’s quote for today’s price. The figures below come from the sources named in each row. Lenire is the brand name of one tinnitus device, and the clinic quotes it separately from the other options.
| Option | Cost the source gives | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tinnitus hearing test | Average $121; range $97 to $234 | CareCredit cost guide |
| Tinnitus retraining therapy, 24 months | National average $3,022; range $2,415 to $5,296 | CareCredit cost guide |
| Tinnitus retraining therapy, by program length | At least $2,400 | Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona |
| Lenire tinnitus treatment | Around $4,000, depending on the clinic | Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona |
| Sound generators | Hundreds of dollars | Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona |
| Hearing aids | At least $1,000 per ear | Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona |
CareCredit’s guide also lists the 24-month TRT average for every state and the District of Columbia, so check the line for your state. TRT is counseling combined with sound therapy. Its guide describes counseling as helping you reclassify the tinnitus sounds as neutral.
For research on cost, a 2014 randomized controlled trial in Otology & Neurotology, indexed on PubMed from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, compared specialized, multidisciplinary tinnitus care based on cognitive behavioral therapy with usual care. The trial enrolled approximately 492 patients and followed them for one year. Its incremental cost from a societal perspective was $357, with a 95% range from -$1,034 to $1,785. That range runs from a saving to an added cost. The authors concluded that the specialized care was cost-effective compared with usual care. The study compared against usual care, and our explainer on trial comparator choice (our research library) explains why that comparison matters.
A 2022 economic evaluation in Ear and Hearing, also on PubMed, modeled cognitive behavioral therapy for subjective tinnitus in Australia. It estimated the incremental cost per responder compared with no treatment at $700 for group CBT, $871 for internet-delivered CBT and $1,380 for individual face-to-face CBT.
Are assessment and treatment billed separately?
The evidence does not say how clinics bill. CareCredit lists the tinnitus hearing test as its own price, and says you may need one before TRT. Ask each clinic for an itemized estimate. Cleveland Clinic asks you to have a hearing test during the six months before your appointment, and to see an ENT doctor first. Whether each item is billed as its own charge is up to the clinic, so ask for an itemized estimate that lists the hearing test, the ENT or doctor visit, each session and any device on its own line. Ask whether a recent hearing test counts toward the six-month requirement.
How many visits are included?
The number depends on the program. Cleveland Clinic’s tinnitus program has two sessions. The first is a 1.5- to 2-hour small group education session. The second includes an individual screening with each of its providers, and you get a report with the recommendations. The clinic schedules a further appointment if it looks like more evaluation would help.
| Program | Visits or time frame the source gives |
|---|---|
| Cleveland Clinic tinnitus program | Two sessions, plus a further appointment if more evaluation is needed |
| TRT counseling (CareCredit guide) | Typically six to 18 months, depending on your response |
| TRT (Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona) | Meaningful results take between three and six months |
For any quote, ask how many sessions it covers, what an extra visit costs, and whether follow-up checks are included. Johns Hopkins Medicine suggests writing your questions down before a visit and bringing someone with you to help you remember the answers.
What happens if the first option is not suitable?
Cleveland Clinic says that when tinnitus has an underlying medical cause, a specialist typically treats that condition first. When there is no clear reason, its plan may include cognitive behavioral therapy, coping strategies, sound therapy, oral appliances, medication review and physical therapy. It says there is often no single answer, and that you may need several treatments at the same time.
Harvard Health says that treating an underlying condition can sometimes reduce or even eliminate the noise, but more often people learn to live with tinnitus or reduce it. Johns Hopkins Medicine states that there is currently no known cure. Harvard Health also says hearing aids are not recommended for people with normal hearing test results.
If the first option does not suit you, the cost question changes. Ask the provider, before you pay, what happens to the money you have already spent, whether there is a refund or a switch, and whether a new quote will apply. If you finance or pay over time, SAMHSA’s guide to free and low-cost treatment advises knowing the terms of when and how much you have to pay back.
Does insurance cover tinnitus treatment?
CareCredit’s guide says TRT is not typically covered by private medical insurance or Medicare, because it is considered investigational or experimental. It adds that if you need hearing aids, you may be eligible for some of the cost of new devices that feature tinnitus masking. The Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona says many tinnitus treatments and audiology services are not covered by most insurance providers. Lenire’s coverage is a question for your plan, not a general rule.
Cleveland Clinic’s billing section lists accepted insurance, financial assistance and billing FAQs. SAMHSA’s guide to free and low-cost treatment is written for mental health and substance use care, but its questions apply to any clinic bill. Ask whether there is a sliding-fee scale, whether grants or charity care are available, and whether a payment plan is offered. Ask your insurer in writing whether the hearing test, the ENT visit and the program are each covered. This is information, not legal advice; your plan’s written coverage decision is the answer that counts.
Evidence and limits
The figures on this page come from different places. CareCredit publishes national and state averages. The Tinnitus & Hearing Center of Arizona gives “around” and “at least” amounts for its own area. The economic studies are from a trial with about 35% of usual-care patients and 30% of specialized-care patients lost to follow-up by month 12, and from an Australian model. None of them tells you what a clinic near you will charge today. The 2014 study’s authors note that uncertainty around the costs and effects is considerable.
Practical resource: questions to ask before you pay
- Is the hearing test included in the total, and does a recent test count?
- Does the quote list the ENT or doctor visit separately?
- How many sessions does the quote cover, and what does an extra visit cost?
- Is a device included, and is it priced separately?
- What happens if the first option does not help: is there a refund, a switch or a new quote?
- If you pay over time, what are the payment terms, and what happens if you stop early?
- Will the insurance answer be put in writing for each part of the care?
Appropriate next step
Start with the ear check. Cleveland Clinic asks for a hearing test within six months and an ENT visit before the program, and Harvard Health advises reporting tinnitus with a normal hearing test to your primary care doctor or ENT. Our remote ear assessment guide explains how that ear check works before you book. Then collect two or three itemized quotes that list the same items, and compare them against the questions above. Some readers also look at other options; our best tinnitus supplements guide covers ingredients, price and side effects.
